A Christmas Story

Last night's service was like no other I've ever been to. One of the things that I like about the Episcopal Church is that it is consistent. One service to the next and one church to the next I can count on what will happen in a service.
Last night before the service started I noticed a great number of people I did not recognize. That's OK great to have more in the church. And lots of talking, OK there are a bunch of old folks that like to talk. Then the service started and I tried to find the song...it was different from what was printed. OK last minute change I can go with that. Then we get to the Gospel. I'm waiting for the procession of the cross, candles and bible. I'm looking at the Gospel in the program and I notice Father Suhar wandering toward the middle of the church. He begins to give the sermon. I'm flipping through my program thinking I missed something. Nope, He just skipped over the Gospel. Okay? Go right to the sermon. Jan says he included the Gospel in the sermon but it was his version of it. Ya know they write these things down for a reason.
So we get through that and move on to the offertory. With all the new people in this was a challenge. Many held the plate wondering what to do. During the offertory the bell ringers were attempting to play. The first song restarted 3 times and I heard some of the bell players starting to snicker.
We move on to communion. Uh? did anyone bring the offertory plates to the altar? Nope. The "ushers" move into position and the choirs moves to the rail and I hear what sounds like a horse and Jan is giggling. Somehow she managed to bust her sandal and it was flopping around as she walked. I check outside to see if there are any storm clouds gathering. I'm sure lightning will strike us all.
The people in the first few rows were new to the church and were unsure what they should do for communion. The good father had offered no instructions to the new comers and the "ushers" also offered no help. So we just waited. Finally the "ushers" moves to the next row and we started to go the the rail. The guy next to me was going to dip his host in the wine. He was going for a good dip and dropped the host into the chalice and began fishing it out with his fingers. I have never seen that happen.
After that the service was rather uneventful. Changed a few songs, Jan accusing me of moving an angel and a guy wandering around during the service talking to people and videoing parts of the service. Then we get to the part at the end where we all light candles and sing Silent Night. I'm sure we will burn the place down. But we made it through that and were not struck by lightning. So Merry Christmas and a Happy Krampus to all!

A Quest

With my retirement looming I feel that I need an activity, a reason to get up in the morning. A quest to give my life meaning. I've been puttering around the house the last few days. Cleaning and arranging things around the house. Moving stuff from one place to another to create what I imagine is order in my life. I'm beginning to realize I've got about as much order in my life as I want. I have found that my most creative ideas come from the chaos around me. So L'm going to take a different route. Last night I was watching "The Hobbit" and thought a quest is what I need.  A quest is what it is then. But unfortunately there is no Smaug for me to battle. Using Bilbo Baggins and the Hobbits as my guide on this quest I decided that meals should be part of this retirement quest. Here is my plan. A Quest " Seafood Resturants I'm Goina Eat At "  Some of these places I have already eaten at but they deserve a second try. Others are new to me and ...

Year and a Day

For a year and a day I have been waiting and on March 16th 2021 I received the second of the required vaccines needed to prevent covid 19. It has been a long strange journey to get here. During this time I have learned about myself and others.  Last January Jan and I took a big trip to Hawaii. It was great we flew from Tampa to Hawaii in a big plane packed in with a bunch of people we did not know. No masks or excessive hand washing. I'm not even sure we carried any hand sanitizer. While there we ate out at  restaurants and visited sights with lots of people.  I also just started my retirement in January and had planned to do lots of fun things. I was going to get involved with volunteering in my community. Jan and I were going to travel and see things. Then before I could even get started on March 15, 2020 everything came to a screeching halt.  Next thing I know we are sitting at home watching Netflix and figuring how to order groceries online. I broke out the sewin...

Downhill Side of Our Trip

Day 11, Heading to Bentonville to see the People of Walmart .  Yea I know this is a little late. Life gets in the way.   October 18th we arrived in Bentonville AR. After checking into the Home 2 Suites in Bentonville we decided to visit the Walmart Museum . This is located in the original Walton 5&10 and has the story of Sam Walton's humble beginnings and the rise of Walmart to what it is now. It was interesting to see all the history of the store. We even got to see the Medal of Honor given to Sam Walton by George H.W. Bush. The museum was set up like a time-line of the growth of Walmart through the years. This was interesting to see and remember what I was doing at diffident dates.  Sam Walton's office was recreated in the museum as he left it the day he died. It was a time capsule from the 1990s.  His pickup truck was also there also preserved as he left it.  For dinner we decided to try out a restaurant recommended by a  New York Times food cr...
