The Trip Continues, Memphis, TN

Update on Day 1, Jacksonville

I'm pleased to announce that on October 28th Elizabeth and Cody Sims had a 5lb 2oz baby girl. They are all healthy and happy. I look forward to meeting my new grand niece.

Day 4
, Memphis, TN. Today we traveled from Huntsville to Memphis, home of Elvis.

We checked into our lovely AirBnB on Adams street within blocks of Beale Street "Home of the Blues"
That evening we drove over to Beale Street to have dinner, explore and go on a Ghost tour. After dropping my charges off at the Blues City Cafe I found parking in a nearby parking garage. While in the garage I took a picture of where I left the car so I could find it later. I texted this picture to my son Austin, who visited Memphis during a college bowl game, and commented on the aroma and patina of the parking garage. Austin responded "That's how Beale street does!"

After taking a look at Beale Street I found my group already seated at the Blues City Cafe. The cafe was bustling with quite a diverse group of diners and servers. I could hear some of the cooks in the back singing. I guess everyone is a singer in Memphis. The restaurant promises to "Put some South in your Mouth"  and features ribs.
I decided to try out the sides and was not disappointed. A trio of turnip greens, seafood gumbo and soul stew. Yummm! This filled me up for our next adventure that evening. A spooky ghost tour of downtown Memphis.
We took the Haunted Memphis Walking Ghost Tour. I was told that the tour happened rain or shine, moon shine that is.
But before the tour Jan and Patty sat at the bar at the Blues City Band Box next door to the Blues City Cafe. Mark, Jenny and I waited outside.
We met for the beginning of the tour at Alfred's On Beale. It was not raining. By the time we got to our first scary spot the rain had moved in. But just like the post office "Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night" will stop us from experiencing the supernatural.

Day 5, Graceland.  The Home of Elvis Presley. We drove this far we had to visit.
But first breakfast. If you are in Memphis and looking for a place for breakfast try out Sunrise Memphis. Their claim of the best breakfast in Memphis is not an exaggeration. They served a really good meal and the coffee was hot and plentiful.

After a hearty breakfast we headed over to Graceland, us and a whole lot of other Elvis fans. Some really big fans.
While there were a lot of people there in looking at the place I'm sure that they are capable of handling many more.

I'm not sure who Elvis's interior designer was but it was ....something. Eclectic might be one way to describe it. I think if Elvis wanted it he bought it.
And he bought a lot of stuff.

Day 5, still in Memphis.
The Lorraine Motel and the Civil Rights Museum

This is a very comprehensive museum of the generational struggle for civil rights in the United States.

But even here in this solemn location there was still a struggle going on. Across the street there was a protester committing on the amount of money spent on the museum.

Coming up next Hot Springs.

A Quest

With my retirement looming I feel that I need an activity, a reason to get up in the morning. A quest to give my life meaning. I've been puttering around the house the last few days. Cleaning and arranging things around the house. Moving stuff from one place to another to create what I imagine is order in my life. I'm beginning to realize I've got about as much order in my life as I want. I have found that my most creative ideas come from the chaos around me. So L'm going to take a different route. Last night I was watching "The Hobbit" and thought a quest is what I need.  A quest is what it is then. But unfortunately there is no Smaug for me to battle. Using Bilbo Baggins and the Hobbits as my guide on this quest I decided that meals should be part of this retirement quest. Here is my plan. A Quest " Seafood Resturants I'm Goina Eat At "  Some of these places I have already eaten at but they deserve a second try. Others are new to me and ...

Radiation Therapy

Dr. Galloway and the gang over at West Florida Radiation Therapy have developed a very efficient process of treating their patients. I arrive about 5 minutes before my scheduled treatment time. The waiting room is often empty in spite of having plenty of chairs. I have my temperature taken and wash my hands. Then within a minute or two I will have my name called. As I'm going back to the treatment room there is usually another guy just coming out of that room.  When the technicians are ready they call me in and I climb onto the treatment table. After I'm on the table my feet and legs are aligned using a hard pillow that is molded to my legs and feet. Then the table is moved into position and the technicians adjust me using lasers and my aiming tattoos.  The techs then leave the room and the machines take over. First two arm move into position to x-ray me to determine the position of my prostate. The table will make slight adjustments itself to move me into the best position. A...

Downhill Side of Our Trip

Day 11, Heading to Bentonville to see the People of Walmart .  Yea I know this is a little late. Life gets in the way.   October 18th we arrived in Bentonville AR. After checking into the Home 2 Suites in Bentonville we decided to visit the Walmart Museum . This is located in the original Walton 5&10 and has the story of Sam Walton's humble beginnings and the rise of Walmart to what it is now. It was interesting to see all the history of the store. We even got to see the Medal of Honor given to Sam Walton by George H.W. Bush. The museum was set up like a time-line of the growth of Walmart through the years. This was interesting to see and remember what I was doing at diffident dates.  Sam Walton's office was recreated in the museum as he left it the day he died. It was a time capsule from the 1990s.  His pickup truck was also there also preserved as he left it.  For dinner we decided to try out a restaurant recommended by a  New York Times food cr...
